The Royals bullpen, since their collapse at the beginning of the season, had made themselves into a fairly respectable group. Ian Kennedy’s move to the pen was somewhat exciting. Jake Diekman looked like he had turned himself into a trade asset.
That was before they gave up nine runs in their last six innings. Diekman has more or less fallen off a cliff, with a 12.95 ERA over his last eight outings. The Royals were tied or had a lead in the 8th inning of each of their last two games, but lost both.
They will send Homer Bailey to the mound, hoping to right the ship and split the series against the Twins. He is coming off two of his strongest starts of the season, surrendering zero runs over 13.2 innings. He pitched into the 8th inning last week in a win over Seattle.
The Royals will also be wearing these absolutely beautiful Kansas City Monarchs throwback uniforms.
Bid on game-worn, autographed jerseys from today’s game.
