Weekend Rumblings - News for July 13, 2019
Bubba Starling talks about his long road to the big leagues with Lynn Worthy.
“Some people don’t know how tough baseball really is,” said Starling. “You can be as physically gifted as you want to be, but most of it’s mental. When I came out of high school, I didn’t really know that. It took me this amount of years now to finally get here. I’ve matured. I went through a lot of struggles, but I think those struggles are the (thing) that have made me the player (I am) today.”

Jeffrey Flanagan gets the scoop from Ned Yost on how Starling will be used.
Yost plans on using Starling regularly in center field. Alex Gordon will play left, Whit Merrifield will play right, Jorge Soler will DH, and Billy Hamilton, who could still be a trade chip, moves to the bench.
Neither Yost nor Moore said they have any doubts that Starling can last in the big leagues, mainly because they believe his defense has been Major League ready for some time.
He also reports that X-rays were negative on Danny Duffy’s hand after he was hit with a line drive.
In his Friday notes, David Lesky is ready to see pitching coach Cal Eldred go.
No, I’m not saying Eldred magically turned him to crap, but I’m saying the one example people had to fall back on was maybe the worst of them all after looking so good. I’ve heard from reliable sources that Eldred is sour on advanced analytics to the point that he mocks them, and there’s just no place in today’s game for that. And before you get your jokes in about how he’s a perfect fit for the Royals, this is an organization that was one of the, if not the, first to have Trackman installed in all their minor league facilities. They may not always listen to the analytics team, but they at least have invested in them. So I guess this is my every other month reminder that Eldred has got to go and the sooner the better.
There are plenty of teams who would love to have #Royals Whit Merrifield, but he is staying put. The #Royals will listen on anybody, but he means so much to the organization, no one can possibly entice them to move him, and haven’t really tried.
