Royals Rumblings - News for February 3, 2020
The Downtown Council makes its pitch for the Royals moving downtown.
Paul Goldberger, a Pulitzer Prize-winning architectural critic, gave the keynote speech. It highlighted how baseball’s roots are inherently urban and how the trend of moving baseball to urban centers creates a symbiotic relationship between the city center and the stadium. Goldberger is the author of “BALLPARK: Baseball in the American City.”...
”All things considered, it was probably just as well that it didn’t work out then, since Downtown wasn’t as strong then and Kansas City was hoping a ballpark would jump-start a whole downtown renewal, which probably was too much to expect,” he said. “Baseball can contribute an enormous amount to Downtown, but it can rarely do the job of initiating an entire downtown renewal by itself. ... Now, however, it is a different time. It is the time to consider building a downtown ballpark.”
Whit Merrifield thinks sign-stealing is worse than steroid use.
“In my opinion,” Merrifield said, “correlating (sign stealing) to steroids … Steroids is an indirect way to cheat. You put your body in a better position to go out and play the game and hope that it translates into becoming a better player.
“What (the Astros) did was a direct way of cheating. They directly affected that they had an advantage over everybody else, and to me, it just discredits everything those players have ever done.”
Royals — OF Brett Phillips (+5)
Here’s all you need to know about how good Phillips is defensively — he had +5 OAA in 30 games played last season. We’ve seen his range and he has a cannon for an arm, regularly clocked by Statcast with throws of 100 mph or faster. He had +6 OAA in ‘18 over 51 games split between the Brewers and Royals.
Clint Scoles at Royals Academy profiles pitching prospect Alec Marsh.
At 6’2 220 lbs Marsh is physical and projects as a pitcher who should have no problems eating up innings as the 144 innings put up this past season shows. If the fastball can get more consistently into the 95-96 mph range it flashed at times this season then he could have the stuff to get to a middle rotation spot but as it is with a low 90s fastball and a pair of average breaking balls he’s a decent bet to get to the backend
