Might this be the last?

Is this season on borrowed time? We don’t really know, but the answer could very well be “yes.” There is a Covid-19 outbreak raging throughout the Miami Marlins clubhouse; as of the time that I’m writing this, 11 of the 33 players who have been traveling with the team have tested positive. In reality, whether or not the season can be salvaged depends on the test results for the Philadelphia Phillies, the team that the Marlins played yesterday. If the current outbreak is limited to the Marlins, we may live to see another day.

But tonight, at least, the rest of baseball seems to be moving ahead as normal. As a result, we’ll see at least one more Kansas City Royals game this season. The Royals will play the Detroit Tigers in Detroit, and unlike the Cleveland Indians, the Tigers are very bad. If you’re being wildly optimistic, this is a chance for the Royals to lock up some wins against an inferior opponent in order to pursue a playoff berth. If you’re being pessimistic, these games could determine which team gets a better draft position in next year’s MLB draft.

Either way, enjoy it. This may be the last Royals baseball we see in a while. Treasure every pitch, no matter how terrible. Treasure every plate appearance, no matter how uninspiring. Baseball is good.
