The Royals have placed catcher Meibrys Viloria and non-roster infielder Matt Reynolds on the Injured List, and have added catchers Freddy Fermin and Allan de San Miguel to the 60-man club pool, according to Alec Lewis of The Athletic.
Neither Fermin nor de San Miguel are considered prospects and are likely in camp to provide more players to catch pitchers preparing in camp. Fermin is a 25-year old Venezuelan who hit .259/.298/.418 with 12 home runs in 86 games across Low-A Lexington and Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Allan de San Miguel is an Australian-born catcher who spent many seasons in the Twins and Orioles organizations. The 32-year old last appeared in an affiliated game with the Royals in 2017, and has effectively served as a coach the last two seasons, while playing in the Australian Baseball League in the winter.
Viloria has played 52 games with the Royals over the past two seasons, hitting .219/.263/.294. Last year, he hit .264/.344/.332 with one home run in 63 games for Double-A Northwest Arkansas. The 23-year old has been lauded for his glove and was in the running to be the backup catcher for the Royals this season. The 29-year old Reynolds is a three-year veteran with the Mets and Nationals, who signed as a minor league free agent with the Royals last winter. He hit .295/.401/.521 with 16 home runs in 111 games for Triple-A Fresno in the Nationals organization last year.
