The Royals play now only for draft position

With last night’s win the Royals have guaranteed they will not be in last place in their division at season’s end. Which means the only thing they play for now is draft positioning. The Royals are currently tied for the eighth-worst record in MLB. They’ll want to lose if they hope to pick any higher. They’ll probably win both games, though, because the Royals do things like that.

Today the Royals will send Carlos Hernández out for his third but final start of the 2020 season. His results have been mixed, thusfar, with six strikeouts but four home runs in six-and-two-thirds innings pitched in his previous starts.

The Tigers will counter with Matt Boyd. Boyd was a once considered a premiere pitching prospect and acquired from the Blue Jays in return for David Price. Unfortunately, he’s now 29 and has pitched parts of six big league seasons to a 5.08 ERA. Time is probably running out on his big league career.
