Will the Royals add some pitching this winter?

Royals Rumblings - News for October 28, 2021

David Lesky at Inside the Crown looks at potential free agent pitching targets for the Royals.

But the problem, as I mentioned above is there’s zero certainty with any of them. I don’t think it would be a huge surprise if Lynch or Hernandez or even Singer figured something out and became a top-of-the-rotation starter, but also, how can you expect that? I’ve written A LOT about how I think the Royals are going to attack the trade market for starting pitching. Honestly, that’s what fits the budget of the team best as starters already under contract tend to be a little less expensive than having to win a bidding war.

That said, while I think they do make a trade (and I’m still banking on Frankie Montas here), there are quite a few free agent options.

Craig Brown at Into the Fountains reflects on the career of Bubba Starling.

Apologies for the recitation of his minor league stats, but those really do tell the story of his career. He struggled frequently and the Royals still brought him along, following their process, making adjustments to his batting stance and hoping…hoping that he would be able to put that athleticism together into becoming a productive hitter. But after five seasons in the organization, it was painfully obvious that it just wasn’t going to happen.

From there, Starling was a fixture in the Omaha lineup over the next two seasons. By this time, it was clear that Starling just wasn’t going to hit enough to be a regular major leaguer—or even a fourth outfielder. The defense and the speed—that athleticism the Royals covet—clearly played. He was a major league-ready defender by his second or third professional season. But the bat always betrayed him.

Kevin O’Brien at Royals Reporter looks at whether a strong Arizona Fall League performance will get Zack Haake or Seuly Matias on the 40-man roster.

Dayton Moore has had a tendency in the past few years to add more “under-the-radar” pitching prospects to the 40-man roster to protect them from the December Rule 5 draft. Last year, Angel Zerpa wasn’t high on many “prospect” lists at the conclusion of the 2020 season, and yet, Zerpa was added to the 40-man roster, much to the surprise of many Royals fans at the time. Granted, it turned out to be a good decision in retrospect, especially since Zerpa made his Royals debut this year.

Even though Haake ranks low in the Royals’ prospect lists, he is thriving this Fall, and most certainly will generate more attention if he continues to have a strong AFL campaign with the Saguaros.
