Royals Rumblings - News for February 23, 2021
Mike Matheny likes the addition of veteran reliever Brad Brach, writes Anne Rogers.
“I was talking with Brad, telling him that there’s opportunity to come in here and compete for a spot, and we absolutely appreciate players who’ve had some experience and had success,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “I remember watching him. That was nasty stuff.”
The skipper also likes his new veterans Carlos Santana and Andrew Benintendi, writes Dave Skretta of the AP.
“There’s a nucleus, a core here,” Matheny said, “and Carlos and Andrew are a real nice addition to it. The conversations I’ve had with both, this is a nice fit for you and it’s not that we have to jump on your shoulders. We’re all pulling here. Why don’t you come in and help pull in the same direction? That’s a great atmosphere for players to come in and be themselves, and that’s what we’re asking them to do.”
David Lesky writes that Hunter Dozier could be a breakout candidate.
I understand that it’s easy to see the similarities between 2018 and 2020 for Dozier and think that 2019 was the outlier. He hit .228 in 2018 and .229 in 2020. He slugged .395 in 2019 and .392 in 2020. Obviously his ISOs were similar with those in mind. But I just keep coming back to the plate discipline and that loss of strength that theoretically should be back in 2021 to get him back to his batted ball numbers that we saw in 2019.

"Not too many people throw 100 mph. Especially lefties. Lynch is one of those guys. He's getting close. I like his attitude on the mound."#Royals
Asked Matheny about picking up former Orioles infielder Hanser Alberto this winter. He started in Baltimore.— Lynn Worthy (@LWorthySports) February 22, 2021
"I think that's a sneaky good signing, just for the record," Matheny said. "This guy is a good player. He brings a lot of versatility where he can play on the infield."
