Royals Rumblings - News for April 20, 2021

Anne Rogers gets an update on Adalberto Mondesi.

Royals manager Mike Matheny said Mondesi is starting to do more controlled activity than just the rest that was prescribed when he first hit the IL before Opening Day. Swinging is still off limits for him, but once he’s able to take swings, there will be more of a timeline for his return.

“This is going to be still controlled movements for awhile,” Matheny said. “This is such a violent action when you’re talking about a swing. It takes some time, so I wouldn’t imagine that I’ll be giving you any good, meaty information here for a bit.”

Josh Staumont explained his one-day stint on the Injured List, writes Lynn Worthy.

“As these vaccines come out, typically the first one for somebody who has had coronavirus, like I did, is a little tougher on you,” Staumont said. “Man, it just knocked me down. Didn’t sleep, pretty bad fever, so we just shut it down for that day.“

“I’ve been so thankful for how they’re handling it, handling this whole COVID-19 going back to last year. … It impacted us a ton. I’m forever thankful for how the Royals have handled it, especially my specific case because I seem to have a little bit of an issue with the COVID-19 virus. As I get vaccinated, we’ll be all guns blazing.”

Alec Lewis writes about what Rusty Kuntz means to the Royals, revealing that Kuntz worked a lot with the analytics department last year.

He has long believed the more information you can acquire, the better off you’ll be, especially if it’s balanced with what the eyes are seeing.

“If you’re not learning, you’re just old and stupid and stubborn, or both, and that’s probably what I am anyway,” Kuntz said. “But I try to use as much as I can of that. And learn as much as I can.”
